More than 70 Ambassadors for Peace and friends attended the four-hour program, with <strong>Mr. Robert Duffy<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Ms.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Chantal Viau-Lee\u00a0<\/strong>serving as co-hosts.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block3\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-i70oj577\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block4\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-e9qv3430\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\"><strong>Dr. Franco Famularo<\/strong>, president of UPF-Canada, introduced UPF&#8217;s global work, highlighting the World Summit conference in April in Seoul, Korea. Federal member of parliament <strong>Hon. Samir Zuberi\u00a0<\/strong>then addressed the gathering, emphasizing that peace comes through patience, perseverance and consistency.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block5\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-9aj6h644\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block6\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-cid0s435\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">Senior advisor and former chair of UPF-International, <strong>Dr. Thomas Walsh<\/strong>, currently serving as rector of the HJ International Graduate School of Peace and Public Leadership in New York, gave a global historical overview of the universality and pervasiveness of religion. He highlighted\u00a0its common components\u00a0\u2013 mythos, logos, practices, theodicy, heroes, and community solidarity\u00a0\u2013 which shape cultural and ethical life, as well as human identity, with\u00a0significant social impact throughout the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block7\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-hdsxw710\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block8\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-bceal439\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">Next was a musical interlude by <strong>Mr. Mishael Eusebio,<\/strong>\u00a0a Filipino-Canadian tenor who has worked with operatic organizations from L&#8217;Op\u00e9ra de Montr\u00e9al to the Houston Grand Opera Company to the Banff Opera Centre, symphonic orchestras, and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. A graduate of the Juilliard School of Performing Arts, Mr. Eusebio was a finalist in the American National Opera Association Auditions 2020. He sang two arias \u2013 \u201cThe Prayer\u201d\u00a0and \u201cNella Fantasia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block9\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-q7ajs776\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block10\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-28qo5443\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">The keynote speaker,\u00a0<strong>Mayor Alan DeSousa<\/strong>, has been mayor of Saint Laurent\u00a0since 2001. He has received various awards for his sustainable development initiatives. A longtime friend of UPF and an Ambassador for Peace, Hon. DeSousa explained how spirituality and faith play critical roles in his borough, with its diverse population of around 100,000,\u00a0and where some 60 languages are spoken.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block11\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-asvcv842\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block12\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-m0ga8447\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\"><strong>Mr. Robert Duffy<\/strong>, secretary\u00a0general of UPF-Canada, then expanded on the conceptual framework of the Ambassador for Peace program, comparing them with ambassadors representing countries or international bodies.\u00a0While the latter\u00a0represent national or organizational interests,\u00a0he said, the former\u00a0represent the Divine, reporting and receiving guidance and inspiration accordingly.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block13\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-bujry907\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block14\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-ecoco450\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">The program featured testimonies from three prominent Ambassadors for Peace who shared presentations on their work for peace and social well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block15\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-thvna971\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block16\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-xamij452\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\"><strong>Mr. Al Abdon<\/strong>, a leader in the Filipino community in Montreal, shared about his life as an immigrant, his work as a Canadian Reserve Forces Instructor, a technician in the Chemistry Department of Concordia University, and his dedicated role in helping to build the Federation of Filipino Associations of Qu\u00e9bec, the Filipino Golden Agers, and the United Filipino Seniors, all of which continue to be active.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block17\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-9nk3w1036\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block18\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-1t7ev455\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\"><strong>Ms. Penny Rankin<\/strong>\u00a0is vice-president of the Conseil Provincial des Femmes du Qu\u00e9bec,\u00a0as well as vice-president in charge of children and youth at the National Council of Women of Canada. In 2020, she co-founded Canadians4Action, an informal collective campaigning for legislative reform to protect children from online abuse. Their efforts were instrumental in persuading MasterCard and Visa to suspend payment processing for PornHub, which has been accused of allowing children to appear in pornographic videos on their platform for years, with limited recourse for removal.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block19\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-xkpzt1101\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block20\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-sayoy458\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">An active member of the Anglican Church of Canada, Ms. Rankin\u00a0spoke of her work as co-chair of the Canadian Council of Churches&#8217; Task Force on Sexual Exploitation, among other roles for the Anglican Diocese of Montreal.\u00a0Several days after our meeting, she\u00a0assumed the role of president of the National Council of Women of Canada, continuing her long-standing commitment to advocacy, leadership, and community involvement.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block21\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-plajp460\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block22\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-yzd9p453\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">Long-time UPF friend and Ambassador for Peace, <strong>Rev. Samuel King-Kabu, <\/strong>who will soon retire as pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church congregation in downtown Montr\u00e9al, gave an update on his multi-year project in Ghana, east of the capital of Accra. His interfaith retreat center for clergy is almost completed, and he explained his plans to continue to develop healthy interfaith relations between Christian and Muslim clergy, leaders of the two prevailing religious communities in Ghana.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block23\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-nekrp1168\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block24\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-k9e0r464\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">Finally, the new Ambassador for Peace nominees were introduced: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block25\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-2kgwt478\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\"><strong>\u2013 Rev. Rosemary Lambie<\/strong>, retired executive minister with the United Church of Canada, who oversaw 450 communities of faith throughout eastern Canada, and gave a touching testimony of her experience at the World Summit in Seoul, Korea, in April, where she interacted with well-known figures in the religious world and others seeking to make bridges of peace in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block26\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-3858p5903\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block27\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-nx07c583\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\"><strong>\u2013 Mr. Boufeldja Benabdallah<\/strong>, international expert in renewable energy, co-founder and spokesperson for La Grande Mosqu\u00e9e de Qu\u00e9bec, from Qu\u00e9bec City.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block28\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-t7ukz2711\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block29\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-j21ye470\" class=\"dEt5S sjVPj J7otF nEzPS\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Q-E3F\"><strong>\u2013 Mr. Larbi Bennouna,<\/strong>\u00a0Chairman and CEO of SETYM International, a management training institute specializing in capacity building for international development, since 2014. A graduate of the Juilliard School of Performing Arts, Mr. Eusebio was a finalist in the American National Opera Association Auditions 2020. He has received various awards for his sustainable development initiatives. A longtime friend of UPF and an Ambassador for Peace, Hon. In 2020, she co-founded Canadians4Action, an informal collective campaigning for legislative reform to protect children from online abuse.
